Who would get into our old teams?

66 posts in this topic

Watching some old Rangers vids, fuck me we were spoiled.

Got me thinking, which of the current crop would genuinely make the first teams of our great squads of old?

And who would have made the subs bench every week?

Not a shit stirring thread, just trying to guage the quailty of the 2016 squad.

None even poor teams of 80s would be a step to far.

Our GREAT squads?

Absoloutely none of them.

This current crop is not a patch on any great Rangers squads I grew up watching,

Ive seen us with Goram and Klos,

Gary Stevens and Ricksen, Butcher and Gough, Robertson and Numan.

Gazza, Laudrup, Durrant, Gio, Albertz and Cooper.

The likes of McCoist, Hateley, Prso and Mols to name but a few.

Even our most recent top flight championship winning side was full of internationals.

Oh and just to add all of Scottish football has dropped off in terms of quality not just Rangers.

Brilliant post, eye opener.

Not as much an eye opener as that anyone but ra sellick film just released.......the level of cheating and corruption within the game to stop them winning....shocking I tell you!!!!

Oh just in time for Xmas!

A wee treat for all the young, manky bastards. They better watch it right away, because dad, if they know who he is, will sell it to buy booze,and/or drugs, on Boxing Day..

I apologise to my son all the time for the shite he has to watch. I grew up watching laudrup gazza etc . Obviously I was spoiled. For him, obsessed with Rangers and watching the teams over the past few years and still to love us is massive to me.

Gutting to know that we'll probably never have they likes again. And before my time like Baxter and cooper guts me.

Oh n to answer the op , are you fleeing? Not one would get into our old teams. I said last week that imagine Gough was still our captain and had these fuds in the team. He'd eat them .

We need a leader to grab them by the jugular and I can't see that in our team. Wallace has been a great servant , but captain? Not in my eyes

Kenny.

Rossiter would make sub appearances if he managed to not get homesick.

Its easy to talk about the great stars and big names we had but guys such as Gregor Steven and Craig Paterson used to get a hard time but id have them over what we have just now.

None even close.

But then, we have had world class players, world cup winners, European cup winners, international captains etc to spoil us.

And domestic competition capable of competing in Europe and who challenged us at home to keep us competitive.

The game has moved on throughout the world, whereas in Scotland it declined. Add to that we're now also shopping for freebies, cast offs, players who have achieved nothing but have potential.

In time we'll compete here again and win the league. But whilst we remain in Scotland domestically we'll never sign the top notch players again.

I'd be borderline to say Tav and Mckay.

Mckay is still only 21 years old and has shown he has the ability to make it, he's really inconsistent but that can improve, I think people genuinely forget how young he is, I mind McGregor had to wait until he was 25 until he got a decent chance in our first team, different players develop at different rates.

Tav, definitely not defensively minded, but an attacking full back with a decent end product is always a good option.

With both in mind, players play better when the players around them are better, I could probably live with Tavs defensive frailty if we had a Cuellar/Weir partnership to rely on, the standard of our team at the moment can not support short fallings, hence we're seeing the results that we are.

I genuinely thought Mackay was bout 25

None.

Never mind the nine-in-a-row side, even going back to Walter Smith's squads during his second spell, there isn't a single player within our current crop that would dislodge Jelavic, Naismith, Davis, Bougherra, Cuéllar, Mendes, etc. Players like Whittaker and Edu were vulnerable to criticism back then, but let's be brutally honest, they'd be the first two names on the team sheet if their 2008-2012 selfs were currently in Warburton's squad.

Tavernier would probably take Broadfoot's place on the bench, but he'd have to keep-up his habit of scoring because the SPL was a stronger league back then and his defensive deficiencies would be exposed, big time.

This is the sad reality of, not only our situation, but Scottish football's as a whole. This is a bitter, bitter and divided little country that is laced with a cut-your-nose-off-to-spite-your-face mentality. When we were relegated to the Third Division, Scottish football shot us in the knee and itself in the foot.

I think Wallace would make the bench but apart from that no one would make our team.

He deserved his place when he had it years back for his ability.

No Rangers player deserves a place for attitude to playing alone.

And the thought of Miller now taking a place of a then mccoist, Mols, Rod Wallace, Negri, Mo Johnstone, etc .........
